ImPACT Testing
(Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing)  

The recognition and management of concussion in athletes can be difficult for a number of reasons.

• Those that experience concussions present with a wide variety of symptoms.
   
• Traditional neurologic and radiologic procedures such as CT, MRI and EEG, although helpful in identifying serious concerns (e.g. skull fracture, hematoma, contusion), are not useful in identifying the effects of concussion.
   
• Most athletes may not understand the potential consequences of concussion and often minimize or deny symptoms so they can return to play.

At the forefront of concussion management is the implementation of baseline and post injury neurocognitive testing. The test takes approximately 20 minutes and measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning. The test sections include:

• Profile and Health History Questionnaire

• Neurophysiological Tests

          You may take the baseline ImPACT test on our website. The test should be taken in a quiet area. The directions before each section should be read slowly and carefully. Test results will be stored in the Sports Training Physical Therapy data base. We are happy to provide you with a copy of your baseline test results. Request the results by emailing mwilhelm@sportstrainingpt.com.

Should you require a follow-up test if you suffer a concussion, you can contact any of our offices to schedule a test in one of our facilities. Sports Training Physical Therapy (STPT) provides a test site for ImPACT baseline testing before an injury.  These results can then be used in the event you suffer a concussion and a follow-up test is recommended.  The baseline test will establish how the individual's brain normally functions and can then be compared with any follow-up test results.  The results of this baseline test will be stored on a secure server that will only be accessible by medical professionals in a HIPAA-compliant medical setting.  STPT does not interpret test results or make any medical recommendations based upon test results.
